  1. While you brush your teeth, make sure the tap is off unless you are rinsing your brush. This saves 6 litres of water per minute.

  2. Place a cistern displacement device in your toilet cistern. You can get these from your water provider and they will reduce the volume of water used to flush.

  3. Don’t spend hours standing in the shower! A shower can use between 6 and 45 litres of water per minute so try to keep time to a minimum.

  4. Make sure you always fill your washing machine – small washes waste water and you’ll be doing more washes in between.

  5. Tired of your drippy tap? A dripping tap wastes approximately 15 litres of water a day! So get it fixed.

  6. Installing a water butt to your drainpipe will allow you to collect rain water – you can use it to clean your car and water your plants.

  7. Instead of using a hose to water your plants, which uses a staggering 1000 litres of water an hour, use a watering can. You can also water your plants early in the morning and late in the evening to prevent evaporation.

  8. Buy water-efficient goods for your household. You can buy showerheads, toilets, taps, washing machine and dishwashers that all work to save water.
